Alison was interviewed by Squashsite.co.uk following the match…..

“They don’t come much closer than that, do they,” said a delighted Waters.

“At 7-1 up in the fifth it was looking good, then it was 7-all and it could have been anyone’s, no-one really deserves to lose a match like that.

“I was lucky she slipped at the end, but obviously I’m delighted to win a third National title, hopefully it will be the start of more titles this year.

“I’d like to dedicate this win to Harry Faulkner [the 18-year-old national junior who died on court earlier this month]. I was on court with him a few times, and he was a great talent. I thought about him during this week here at the Nationals – if you’re watching this Harry, this one’s for you.”

‘Harry Faulkner’

I am so sad to hear the news that 18 year old squash player Harry Faulkner died last week.

I had only met Harry a few times but having been on court with him, I knew he was a great talent and had a bright future ahead of him. Not only this, but he a great person off-court and much loved by everyone who knew him. My thoughts go to his family and friends at this time.

People should be made aware of c-r-y which is the Cardiac Risk in the Young organisation.

Everyone should get tested and look at their website www.c-r-y.org.uk where you can book a test.

Things like this shouldn’t be happening! It’s too young! So please please get tested.

‘WSA Comeback Player of the Year’

I’m delighted to have won the ‘WSA Vicki Cardwell Comeback Player of the Year’ award for 2012.

I remember going to Wembley when i was a kid to watch the British open and running down after the matches to collect Vicki’s autograph so it makes it extra special winning this award. Thank you very much to WSA for voting for me.

I’m thrilled that after being out injured for over a year with an Achilles injury that in 2012 I won five WSA tournaments and got my ranking back to 4 in the world.

I’m looking forward to 2013 now and the year ahead.

11/9 11/1 11/7

Semi- Finals

‘Really enjoyable week in Cleveland.  I have stayed with the same family for the last few years now so it’s kind of home away from home which is nice!

First round I had a good match with Joshna. She played really well and really took the game to me. I got in front of her in the 3rd and 4th which made the difference.

The Quarter-Finals was a good match against Nour El Sherbini! Having played her for the first time in the world team finals winning 3-2 I knew it could be a tough match!
Got my game plan sorted and I managed to implement it well and was really pleased to win 3-0 and I felt sharp during the match!

Semi-Finals  v Raneem was tough and she was on form and playing well! The first two games were 9-9 so really I could have gone 2-0 up! She played the big points well and going 2-0 up she grew in confidence and it was a hard ask then! I don’t think I got my game plan right and was too passive and didn’t attack enough when I should have! A good one to learn from and makes me more determined to get it right next time!

Some positives to take away from this event and some clear things to work on as well!

Am heading home now to get ready for our British nationals staring next week on the 14th February which I look forward to playing every year!’

Update: 26th January 2013

I have had a really good months training since Christmas which has been tough but have really enjoyed it.

Am now feeling ready and raring to go for the upcoming tournaments. I’m off on Wednesday 30th for a Gold Event in Cleveland, Ohio. I have played this tournament for a few years now and really love playing there. We stay with families and I’m staying at the same family that I normally stay with and I can’t wait to see them!

First round starts Saturday 2nd February and I’m drawn against a qualifier.

Ready to rock and roll!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year! Here’s to a great 2013 for everyone.

I’m really looking forward to this year and hopefully it’s going to be a big year. My first tournament is the Cleveland Classic starting on the 2nd February. It’s quite nice to have a month at home really getting stuck into good training and working on lots of things.

We had a busy end to the year so I had nice ten day break over Christmas and the New Year and now I feel refreshed and ready to go again! Looking forward to the challenges ahead!

Hong Kong Open

First Round
Alison Waters beat Emma Beddoes 11/4 11/3 11/2

Last 16
Alison Waters beat Line Hansen 12/10 11/3 6/11 11/7

Quarter Finals
Alison Waters lost to Omneya Abdel Kawy 9/11 11/9 11/6 8/11 9/11

It was a big week in Hong Kong mainly due to the fact that the IOC were visiting for an Olympic visit. We are trying to get into the 2020 Olympics ( if you don’t know this then where have you been hiding?!!) and we were being assessed over the course of two days to see if we have what it takes to be an Olympic sport.. Of course we do!!!! The setting for the semis and final was on the spectacular harbour front, what a perfect setting; decision is next may so hopefully they liked what they saw.

Squash wise for me it started off well beating Emma Beddoes 3-0 who was coming back after a foot injury, then had a close match with Line Hansen, Line played really well and didn’t make it easy for me at all. Onto the quarter final downstairs on the lively one sided class court vs the inform Omneya Abdel Kawy. Very tight game and in every game it was point for point almost, no one really getting much of a lead at all. It was a fine margin between me losing 11-9 in the 5th and winning 11-9 in the 5th. Omneya played the big points well at the end and all credit to her really. I didn’t think I played badly at all, but some things to work on now which could make the small difference between the win and the loss.

Home now and having a few days recovering mainly from the 13 hour flight home and the 8 hour time difference. Then it’s back to training and then off next week to the Cayman Islands for the world open, the biggest tournament of the year. I missed last year’s world open due to injury so am really looking forward to playing this year! It’s pretty open this year and anyone on their day can cause an upset so it should be an exciting event.

World Team Championships (12th-17th November)

Mixed emotions from last week at the women’s world team event. We had a good pool and got of to a good solid start beating South Korea and Mexico 3-0. Then we played Wales and then Ireland in the quarter finals winning them again 3-0. We were drawn to play Malaysia in the semi-finals and we knew on paper that this could be a close one potentially going down to the final match. It did and I had the task of closing out the match for us beating Low Wee Wern 3-1. Tight match and it’s such a different feeling playing in a team event. People will say it’s just another match but when you go on knowing that you have to win otherwise your team is out adds to the pressure!

Going into the final vs Egypt we knew that every match could potentially go either way! We had lost to Egypt in the final in 2008 and so we were all desperately keen to win this time round! Unfortunately we didn’t! Every match went to five games and we lost 2-1. Was neck and neck all the way but just wasn’t to be for us unfortunately! Tough to take but all credit to the Egyptians who played well to win the title again!

Two years now till the next one in Canada and no one beats us four times in a row!!!!

Been home for a few days and back into training! Had National league last night where we got a good 5-0 win and takes us to top of the table at the half way mark! Off on Friday to Hong Kong for a gold event so not much time at home before we are off again!

Hong Kong is one of my favourite places and tournaments so am looking forward to it!! Follow the event on live streaming, should be a good one!!
