The women’s final promised to be a very close encounter between qualifier, although a former world No 3, Alison Waters, and the undisputed queen of Irish Squash Madeline Perry, the No1 seed and the current World No 4. Unfortunately for the capacity crowd here at Fitzwilliam the match was not as close as was expected, with Alison taking control from the start and dictating play somewhat, but with both ladies playing with great athleticism and grace, she took the first two games in what appeared quite comfortable style 11/4 each. Madeline seemed to be struggling a little with her movement, which she explained afterwards was due to very bad blisters on her feet, but she came back into the match much better in the third to take a well earned 7/2 lead, but slowly Alison bit into the lead to take a match ball at 10/9, and although Madeline saved that first one, thanks to a tin from Alison, Alison then took the extra points for a 12/10 win and a 3 – 0 match score in 40 minutes.
Alison – ”Delighted to have won here again in Dublin, to have beaten both Laura and Madeline along the way makes it feel really good. I feel as though I am getting back to somewhere near my best as I was before my injury and now I just want to get back to the top of the rankings again”

‘The Granite Girls’ report on the final:
Alison comes out strong, showing no mercy to dominate the first game.
Her amazing gets and terrific volley drops left Latasha scrambling
from left to right. In the second game Latasha stepped up her game
and gave Alison a run for her money.
The spectators’ jaws dropped watching the long, intense rallies. But
it was Alison who managed to pull out a close game, going up 2-0.
Stepping on to the court for the third game, Alison looked
determined to close the game in 3.
Alison punished Latasha with her attacking volleys, tight length,
and high pace. Latasha gave it all she had but it was not enough to
beat the former world number 3.
With a hold and flick from the back left corner, Alison became the
first champion of the hopefully annual Granite Club Open!
The crowd was huge and very appreciative of the high-quality play.
Now everyone’s enjoying the two free kegs! Cheers

1st Round: Alison Waters beat Emma Beddoes 10/12, 11/5, 11/9, 11/7 (3-1)
1/4 Finals: Alison Waters beat Aisling Blake 11/2, 11/4, 11/5 (3-0)
Tournament Director, Glen Wilson said on Alison’s 1/4 Final match:
”This was a very dominating performance by the former world number three. Waters started strong and never looked back. The pace was high and accurate and Blake had no answer to the relentless pressure she was being placed under.
A very convincing 3/0 win that had the crowd in awe of what was a very strong statement moving through to the semi finals”

I’m in Canada now for a two week trip. Montreal is the first stop then Toronto next week.
I am really enjoying Montreal. I’ve been here since Thursday as originally I was meant to be qualifying but then someone pulled out of the main draw so as I was the number one qualifier it put me straight into the main draw.
I’m staying with a great family who live only a 2 minute walk from the club which makes life easy.
The weather has been warm and sunny. I had packed lots of clothes for the cold weather as everyone expected it would be, but this seems to be there mildest winter and I’m still walking around in a big jumper…. not great!!!
The main round kicks of tomorrow and my first round match is against English player Emma Beddoes.
Looking forward to getting started now especially as today in 28 which means I’m wiser and mature right?? Maybe not… ha!

“Arrived in the Cayman Islands Friday night and it was great to walk out of the plane into 25 degrees plus!
Staying in a nice hotel about 5mins walk from the beach, beach is amazing and sea temperature perfect!
… …….But I’m here for squash so have been practicing the last few days at the club! First round there before the quarter finals move onto the glass court! I’m playing a qualifier so will find out tonight who I’m playing!
This morning I was up early to go to their local television studios where Marlene West (player from Cayman) and I did a live interview on their ‘Daybreak’ show! Great coverage for the tournament and squash! Tried not to think that it was going out live on air, it was pretty relaxing and a good experience!
Thumbs up for the Cayman Islands!!”

‘‘Tough match tonight with Nicol! Tried my hardest and had a set game plan that was trying to stick to but that seemed to get harder and harder as the match went on! She was pretty steady and didn’t give me much!
I felt a tad sluggish with my movement and you can’t afford to be feeling slow especially when playing Nicol!
Pleased to have got to the semis but would have been nice to have won especially on my birthday!! I seem to have a habit of losing on my birthday to Nicol in Malaysia!! That’s got to change!
So I have one day here then fly back Sunday night. Going to have a nice relaxing day tomorrow, hopefully some sun, then watch the finals and of course a have wonderful foot massage!!!
U Gotta love Malaysia!!”

“Very tough match today that I managed to sneak through in the end.
I was 2-0 up when my length dropped a bit. Rach was so deadly with her short shots from all over the court, so I was getting punished all of the time.
In the 5th I found a bit more lenght and just dug in really and was thinking that I hadn’t come all the way around the world to lose now!
Really pleased to be in the semi’s tomorrow”

”Beat Raneem today in the first round 3-0! Was a tough 3-0 though and was pretty happy to win! Raneem is a very talented player and has had some good results recently so I knew it could be a tough match! It’s great to be back at a tournament and in the quarters I have Rachael Grinham! We move to the glass court at the shopping mall so I can’t wait to get on there and get playing again!
Rest now though and some great Thai food soon! Good to be back in Malaysia!”
